Over the years, the Alpha Upsilon Lambda Chapter has awarded over 300 merit-based scholarships, assisting local students in attending undergraduate and graduate school, at institutions in Alabama and throughout the country.
MLK Legacy Awards will also be presented for significant community contributions in several categories. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded by seven African American men in 1906 while pursuing their education at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. The fraternity holds the distinction of being the first college fraternity established for African Americans in the nation. It has been interracial since 1945 and now has 686 chapters at academic institutions and within communities in 45 states, D.C. and several countries. The fraternity’s mission is to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.
